No Dursleys in Harry Potter 4
wkrc.com

Boy wizard Harry Potter's evil uncle and aunt have been cut from the fourth movie in the fantasy series.

British actors Richard Griffiths and Fiona Shaw were shocked to discover scenes involving their characters, Vernon and Petunia Dursley, have been scrapped from the film adaptation of JK Rowling's fourth book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Sleepy Hollow star Griffith explains, "Filming had already started on the fourth and Fiona and I asked the producers, 'Are we in it?' and they said, 'Oh, did no one tell you?'

JK's family history
Croydon Guardian

Not really news, but some interesting info about JK Rowlings family tree.

You may think suburban Croydon and the mythical world of wizards and witches have little in common but think again.

J K Rowling, creator of Harry Potter and the fifth highest paid person in Britain, has roots in Thornton Heath the Croydon Guardian can reveal. The author's family tree stretches back to a humbler legacy of 19th century labourers, blacksmiths and carpenters.

Most notably, her great-great-grandfather John Philipot Bulgen, from Thornton Heath, was born in 1864 and worked as a navvy before volunteering for the First World War. He received three medals recognising his service.

In 1918 John's son, Thomas Edward, married Rose Kathleen and their daughter Kathleen Ada wed Ernest Arther Rowling in 1942.

It was their son, Peter, and his first wife Anne, who had a daughter in 1965. They named her Joanne Kathleen, now better known as J K Rowling.

Vodafone signs up Harry Potter
Silicon.com

Vodafone has clinched a 16-country deal with Warner Online to get its hands on global entertainment including Looney Tunes, Harry Potter, The Matrix and sitcom Friends.

Neither party is talking about money and details about immediate products are a little vague - beyond the idea that Warner will supply games, screensavers and alerts based on its brands. These will come within the next three to four months according to a spokeswoman.

She said: "This will be more encompassing than a deal with specific brands – it will also include future Warner products."

Kate Winslet to play Fleur?
Newsround

Titanic star Kate Winslet could be in for a role in Goblet Of Fire, if a newspaper report about her husband Sam Mendes can be believed.

Film director Sam is quoted as saying: "Kate had a meeting with director Chris Columbus and some producers.

"She was asked to have an important role as a young French wizard or something like that."

That points to the role of schoolgirl Fleur Delacour. But Kate is 29. And Chris isn't even directing GoF.

Interview with Moaning Myrtle

About.com has an interview with Shirley Henderson, a.k.a. Moaning Myrtle, that talks about her role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

You’re doing another Harry Potter? The next one, yeah, I start filming the next one soon. Moaning Myrtle.

Is Harry Potter just a big special effects machine? It is, yeah. My stuff is obviously special effects because I’m being a ghost, but I do have to do all this flying through the air, in these awful contraptions, and it’s rigorous, it’s quite hard work.

You’re in the fourth but no the third? Myrtle’s not in the third, but she pops up in Harry’s bath in the fourth one.

Is it a smaller or bigger role than Chamber of Secrets? I don’t know because I haven’t seen a script yet. I’m waiting on that to arrive.

JK Rowling wins first adult book prize
Reuters

Rags-to-riches author JK Rowling has notched up another accolade for her boy wizard series, with "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" taking a major adult fiction prize for the first time.

Millionaire Rowling proved she was more than just a children's writer, facing off heavyweight authors like James Herbert and Ian Rankin to pick up her fiction prize.

"Unabashed adult Harry Potter fans are very, very dear to my heart, and obviously in the case of Order of the Phoenix, they were the ones who were physically able to lift the book," she said.

JK meets the Queen
BBC

Britain's first female train driver, stars and business high-flyers are among women hailed by the first royal "girl power" celebration.

Guests included author JK Rowling, singer Charlotte Church and pioneering train driver Hannah Dadds.

Singer Charlotte Church, at 18 the youngest person invited, said: "I feel privileged to be here. I don't think I'm worthy when all I do is sing."

She said the person she wanted to meet most was JK Rowling but she had been "too nervous to approach her".

She was later spotted deep in conversation with the Harry Potter author.

The Queen had also been "appreciative of Harry", Ms Rowling later said.

JK Rowling named decade's most successful author
USA Today

When USA TODAY began its Best-Selling Books list 10 years ago, books weren't sold on the Internet, J.K. Rowling was a struggling, unknown writer, and Oprah Winfrey had yet to become publishing's darling.

A decade later, USA TODAY's book list reveals a different world. Rowling is the decade's most successful author, landing five of the top six spots on the list of the 100 best-selling books of the past 10 years.

JK hints at more Harry Potter books
CourierPress

Writer J.K. Rowling hinted Thursday that she may not stop at seven books about the adventures of the young wizard and may write a further installment featuring the adult Harry.

In a live Web chat to mark World Book Day, Rowling - who has always insisted she'll write only seven Potter books - was asked by a fan if she intended to write books about Harry after he leaves Hogwarts, the academy for wizards.

"Probably not. But I'll never say never because every time I do, I immediately break the vow," she replied.

This also supports the idea that Harry won't die in books 6 or 7. How could JK write more HP books if there is no Harry?

Book 6, 2005 or 2006?
MarketWatch

Looks like we could be seeing Book 6 as early as next year, according to Scholastic.

For Scholastic, that catalyst is Harry Potter and Bird thinks the stock could enjoy "meaningful upside" 18 months out when the market may begin to discount the potential launch of the next book. He thinks the sequel is likely to be published in the summer of 2005 at the earliest but more likely in the summer of 2006.
